Chris Froud

UK and European Patent Attorney

Withers & Rogers LLP

Chris is a UK and European patent attorney and partner at European patent specialists Withers & Rogers. He was one of the first European patent attorneys registered as a representative before the new Unified Patent Court.

He drafts and prosecutes patent applications in electronics, computing and physics for a wide range of clients, from large corporations to small and medium sized businesses, helping them to identify, protect, and exploit their inventions. The patent strategies he has devised have been crucial for obtaining funding and licensing opportunities for several start-ups to propel these businesses forwards.

Chris has a wealth of experience in robotics, particularly robotics navigation, control and sensing, for industrial and logistics robots. He also handles patents for artificial intelligence, telecommunications, mobile devices, software, displays, medical devices, camera technology, optics and optical systems, and lasers. He advises clients on the patentability of computer software and business methods, and is successful at manoeuvring clients around the challenges such inventions sometimes face in the UK and Europe.

Before joining the patent profession, Chris worked as a research scientist at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. He holds a PhD from the Optoelectronics Research Centre at the University of Southampton, focusing on developing an X-ray laser system, and a Master of Chemistry degree, also from the University of Southampton.
